Why group classes instead of choir or private lessons?
The Singwell model was first conceived as a response to a great deal of interest from parents of younger children in private vocal instruction. Because the voice is such a delicate part of the body, it is not sufficiently well-developed before the age of 14-16 to be able to handle the physical exertion of a private lesson. Starting private lessons too early can actually cause damage to the young voice. We believe, however, that there is value in learning to support a healthy tone using breath, and to begin teaching the basics of solid technique early. It's also fun to get individual attention, and to have the opportunity to perform a solo, experiences you tend not to get from singing in a choir. As they get older, our Singwell graduates move on to successful further study in the private voice studios of Nicole Philibosian and Ronald Gentry.
What will my child experience in the class?
During each class, we practice breathing exercises to build stamina and control, and gently warm up our voices using kid-friendly vocalises. Following our warm-up, each child receives individual instruction on a solo piece that has been assigned based on the individual skill level and vocal range. While each student is receiving their solo time, the other students observe quietly, and are able to learn quite a bit from each other. The solos are gradually memorized, and then performed (accompanied by a pianist) at a concert with other students at the end of each session.
What materials will my child receive?
Each child will receive a binder with copies of each of the songs being sung in that class, as well as an accompaniment CD to practice with at home.
What does it cost?
Each class session costs $200, which includes ten classes, all materials, and the final recital. We offer family discounts, as well as incentive discounts for signing up for multiple classes at the beginning of the school year.
At what age should my child start?
Typically, we do not accept children younger than five years of age. They continue in Singwell classes until the age of about 13 or 14, at which point they are vocally ready to begin private study with Mr. Gentry or Ms. Philibosian.
When do classes take place?
We offer a convenient schedule of after-school programs across the city. For details, see our Current Offerings page.
Where are classes held?
We currently offer classes at Singwell Headquarters and The Children's House on Traverse City's west side, St. Francis High School in downtown Traverse City, and at the Pathfinder School between Traverse City and Suttons Bay. What if my child is nervous? What if I'm not sure Singwell is right for me?
We offer a risk-free "pilot" class at the beginning of each session. Students are also welcome to visit our classes, with advance notice. All are welcome to attend our end-of-session recitals; see our Upcoming Events for details.
